In a post in his Marketing Minute Blog, Drew McLellan talks about using a simple, personal thank you card.
Sending a thank you note is first and foremost a kind and sincere thing to do when someone has gone out of their way for you – and Drew also makes the point that because receiving a hand written note is so rare these days it’ll also likely have a greater impact than popping out a quick email.
That got me thinking – what other simple, ‘old school’ staples would similarly standout simply because no-one does them anymore?
- Anything hand-written.

- A personal call or visit
- A thoughtful, considered gift
- An unrequested favour
- Simply knowing and using a customer’s name
What other simple ideas and common courtesies are not that common anymore? Could they set you apart because they’re unexpected?
Wouldn’t it feel right just to do them anyway?
