It’s been around a week since we ‘announced’ the launch of Iddictive.com – our new site dedicated to innovative business ideas.
Part of the idea behind the site was to use it as a demo of the kind of content small businesses could create on limited budgets (we haven’t spent a dime on it yet).
With that in mind I thought I’d share a few ideas that have popped up in the week since.
The Topic of Your Content Matters
This might sound obvious but it’s opened my eyes a little. After less than one week, the number of visitors and comments on Iddictive is already on a par with this site (which is around 6 months old).
Some of that will be down to the novelty factor and specific efforts like news releases. However, the feedback I’ve had seems to suggest that the topic really strikes a cord.
Advice: Think laterally about your topic. Does your industry really need another ‘tips and advice’ site or could you be doing something more ‘exciting’ in the eyes of your readers?
Of course, you need to keep your topic relevant to your business. We’ve already started fielding enquiries from businesses interested in developing ‘trend based’ content for their sites so hopefully we’ve kept the topic relevant enough.
Your Content Should Talk About Your Prospects (or what they like)
Rather unsurprisingly, as we’ve based our content on specific businesses we’ve found that many of them get in touch with us. It’s helped us build contacts quickly, outside of our traditional network.
So far this has led – in a week – to two potential joint venture projects and at least one promising source of referrals.
This will obviously work better if your prospects are businesses but could well be adapted for B2C markets by talking about specific products, events or services that will resonate with them.
Alternatively you could talk about other businesses in your space as a way of getting in touch or getting on their radar. A simple idea that we have used is a quick email or ‘Tweet‘ to anyone we’ve written about – inviting them to comment.
People Like Interviews
I’ve written here before about the power of interviews but if the idea needed reinforcing, the interview we posted today with MyMillionDollarMovie.com founder Casey Walker is already attracting tons of traffic.
What’s more, your interviewees will often be happy to help promote your content – as Mr Walker has to great effect.
I’m certain that there’ll be tons more useful stuff to come out of Iddictive over the next few weeks – which of course, I’ll be happy to share here.
In the mean time <plug> if you’d be interested in talking about developing your own custom content project or a possible joint venture with us, please get in touch </plug>.

Mark,
Iddictive is a great demo project. However, most small businesses will have to pay someone to design their website–even if it’s based on WP like yours and to design their content marketing strategy. So, it’s not quite free. Effective, but not necessarily free.
Hi Newt,
Great point. Although we haven’t spent any money on it as yet – most small businesses taking the same route would.
So it’s certainly not free, but I do feel it’s within the budgets of most small businesses.
I’m going to write a quick post to run through some of the costs involved.
Thanks – Mark
